Is it too early to talk about who might win the Copa del Rey overall? It probably is because the one discard has not yet kicked in – as it does for most classes at eight races – but right now there are two boats which are dominating. And, to be fair, that they are both leading their classes is no surprise at all.

In the 6 Metre Classic fleet it is Bribon which is already running away with it. They have four firsts and lead the seven boat class by four points ahead of Titia. The core crew are longstanding Bribon sailors including Canadian double Olympic medallist Ross MacDonald on tactics and Alberto Viejo and Roi Alvarez. Viejo sailed on Bribons since 2001. If skipper-helm Pedro Campos won the big cup it would be his 11th Copa del Rey. And if Bribon won it would be the sixth time after 1984 and 1985 in Frers two tonners, in 1994 in a Farr 44, in 2000 it was a Farr 53 and most recently the TP52 in 2011.

In BMW ORC Class 1 Nacho Montes and Oscar Chaves’ Estrella Damm has won all their races but for the fifth they scored when a jib track pulled off the deck. Their crew is a bit of a Spanish all-star team including helm Luis Doreste Martinez of North Sails, some time singer and double Laser Olympian, navigator Gonzalo Infante, and tactician Pichu Torcida, past J/80 World Champion.

‘Pichu’ Torcida, tactician on Estrella Damm Sailing Team, BMW ORC1 class says: "The boat is going very fast with the weather conditions we are having so far -winds below 13 knots-, we do good starts, the communication and the strategy among all of us is perfect, we are not getting into trouble and everything works well for the moment. We were unlucky in that fourth race as we had a very expensive breakage: two boats overtook us, but those things happen and you have to be aware of it. Rats on Fire is always there and if the wind conditions change it will be harder for us to be in the front. The important thing is that we are improving every day and knowing more and more of our boat. They know theirs much better than us, as they have been sailing together on this boat for many years now."

The weather forecast for the day promises hot temperatures, around 30c with high humidity. The sea breeze should come in around 193 to 200 degrees between 1300hrs and 1400hrs and build to 12-13kts.

The Sothebys Mallorca IRC Classes and BMW ORC 1 are on Echo course, most westerly offshore track. ClubSwan 50 and the other Swan classes are on Charlie with the Melges 40 while the 6M and the J/80 are inshore on Alpha.
