A class win at the famous Copa del Rey MAPFRE, the Mediterranean’s annual summer showcase regatta, can elude even some of sailing’s top teams for many years. Others seem able to impose themselves year on year in their chosen classes. The 132 boat 11 division 38 Copa del Rey MAPFRE closed today with the Copa del Rey two top trophies going to Italy’s Leonardo Ferragamo for winning the ClubSwan 50 class and to BMW ORC Class 1 winners Estrella Damm, the DK 46 of Ignacio Montes and Oscar Chaves

All classes other than the GC32s – which run their normal GC32 Racing Tour schedule – carry their qualification points into the last two days. Three races are scheduled for all classes other than the Purobeach Womens Cup and the Herbalife which should have up to five.

The new scoring system being employed at the 38 Copa del Rey MAPFRE started to take effect today. As the 132 boat 11 division regatta moves from its Preliminary Series to two days of Finals racing, scores are allocated by the classification order after this opening series. The first placed boat carries one point to the Finals, the second two and the third three. King Felipe of Spain steered Aifos 500 in the ClubSwan 50 class for the first time of this regatta.

With a strong Mistral wind blowing on the Mediterranean to the north of Mallorca, the third day of the 38 Copa del Rey MAPFRE was the most challenging yet. Racing in gusty offshore NE’ly winds of 12-25 knots, the winning watchwords were keeping it safe and simple in many of the 11 divisions.

It is Wednesday and so we reach the theoretical middle of the 38 Copa del Rey. With a strong Mistral blowing in the north of the Mediterranean the winds since early this morning have been brisk, over 30kts in the gusts at times already. Racing has been delayed for a while but there appears to be a certain confidence around the dock that we will go racing during the afternoon but it will be breezy and unstable, almost certainly more than 20kts.

It is the second day of the 38 Copa del Rey MAPFRE and the GC32 fleet will be on the water for their official training race today, so in essence the event reaches it full magnitude today with all 11 classes out on the Bay of Palma. Two races are on the menu for most classes with the exception of the sportsboats of the Herbalife J/80 and Purobeach Women’s Cup Viper 640s which are programmed for three contests.
