Cosmopolitan Copa del Rey MAPFRE

more

The Copa del Rey MAPFRE has always had a magnetic appeal to boats and crews from outside of Spain. It draws an increasingly international entry and the global interest in the regatta has never been higher, not least as classes like the ClubSwan 50, Maxi72, GC32, Melges 40 and TP52s have chosen the Copa del Rey MAPFRE as a key event on their season long circuits.

Sting in the Tale

more

Sunshine and boiling summer heat, the 37 Copa del Rey MAPFRE may be the biggest ever but it is likely one of the hottest ever. The local Mallorcan newspapers are talking of heat ‘like Africa’! And one of the key attributes required at the ‘Copa, is stamina. It is a long regatta, racing six days Monday to Saturday. The ability to stay regular, consistent is important. And after the glitz and glamour of last night’s ubiquitous Owners Party today there are a few dusty looking crews on the dock before racing.

Up for the Cup?

more

Is it too early to talk about who might win the Copa del Rey overall? It probably is because the one discard has not yet kicked in – as it does for most classes at eight races – but right now there are two boats which are dominating. And, to be fair, that they are both leading their classes is no surprise at all.

6 Metres Growing in Popularity in Spain

more

The 6 Metres have become popular in Spain again in no small way because of the interest of King Juan Carlos and the fleet has rebuilt. He spent some time ashore unable to sail for a few years due to a medical issue. When he felt better he tried a 6M and he liked it. Juan Carlos represented Spain in the Dragon at the 1972 Olympics in Kiel and finished 15th.

Momo and Beau Geste Win Coastal Challenge

more

The traditional coastal race at 37 Copa del Rey MAPFRE is a break from the usual diet of windward-leeward races. In today’s light sea breeze conditions and sweltering summer temperatures it may have felt longer than the actual miles sailed – especially for the smaller boats – but the headlands and consequent transition zones made for an interesting challenge. Even so, starting and the first windward legs were key to success in Mallorca Sotheby’s IRC 0 and 1 where Momo and Beau Geste both triumphed.
