There is great excitement around the RCNP this morning as their Finn bronze medalist, Joan Cadrona, who is the first Olympic sailor from the home club to win a medal, returned to his hime club this morning and met the Spanish Royal Family led by King Felipe who of course is steering AIFOS 500. The warmth of the welcome, as you would expect, was massive and there was a long, standing ovation for the 23 year old who is from Mahon, Menorca originally but who trained from and has raced for the RCNP since he was young.

The ClubSwan36 goes from strength to strength

The ClubSwan 36 made a debut at the Copa del Rey MAPFRE in 2019 and since then the fleet has grown to realise a fleet of ten boats racing this week. To date many of the new owners are coming from Italy and other one design classes like the Melges 32 and the Melges 24, but the appeal is widening.

With just one race to sail at Palma’s 39 Copa del Rey MAPFRE, Andy Soriano’s TP52 team on Alegre have all but secured the overall win in the IRC class. With another two hard earned wins in today’s light, shifty wind conditions on the Bay of Palma Soriano’s team cannot be caught. 
But the international crew which is utilising the flagship regatta as an enjoyable, practical warm up for the first 52 SUPER SERIES regatta for 17 months want to complete their second Copa del Rey class win on an appropriate high note.

The teams go into this second phase of the regatta carrying only the number of points equivalent to their position at the end of the Preliminary Series, which finished yesterday. King Felipe VI`s Aifos 500 starts in second position in the BMW ORC 1 class.

The Copa del Rey MAPFRE continues to place a focus on women`s sailing. The Mallorca Sotheby’s Women’s Cup class will bring together eleven teams that compete against each other on equally matched One-Design J/80s on the bay of Palma. The winner in 2019, Helena Alegre, returns to defend the title but is again up against several very good teams including Decoexa, skippered by Olatz Muñoz the current J/80 female world champions.

All classes other than the GC32s – which run their normal GC32 Racing Tour schedule – carry their qualification points into the last two days. As the 132 boat 11 division regatta moves from its Preliminary Series to two days of Finals racing, scores are allocated by the classification order after this opening series. The first placed boat carries one point to the Finals, the second two and the third three. King Felipe of Spain steered Aifos 500 in the ClubSwan 50 class for the first time of this regatta.

Nautor’s Swan returns to the Copa del Rey MAPFRE with a magnificent fleet of 31 one designs, distributed across three classes: ClubSwan 50, Swan 45 and Mallorca Sotheby’s ClubSwan 42. His Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain and His Majesty King Harald V of Norway, will compete for the ‘crown’ of the ClubSwan 50 class, in their largest racing fleet to date.
